Fonts
& Logos: Font Analysis, Logotype Design, Typography, Type Comparison
by Doyald Young
iBook Review
Reviewer: Roger C. Parker from Dover, NH
Fonts & Logos is required reading for any student or designer,
whether newcomer or experienced, who needs to develop a logo for assignment,
client or boss. Fonts & Logos is a major achievement, a 5 pound, 385-page,
9 by 12-inch labor of love. Fonts & Logos offers a book length equivalent
of a yearlong college-level class delivered by one of the world's leading
logo designers. Fonts & Logos describes, and in large, annotated illustrations
shows, the process by which the characters (or glyphs) of an ordinary alphabet
are converted into an attractive, memorable logotype representing a firm's
image. One of the book's strengths is the way it not only shows the original
alphabet as well as the final logo, but it also shows rejected alternatives
and describes some of the reasons the alternatives were rejected or didn't
work as well as the final choice. There's magic in comparing a "straight"
alphabet with the resulting logo as well as understanding the subtle changes
that often transform everyday characters into memorable logos.

How
to Design Logos, Symbols & Icons: 24 Internationally Renowned Studios
Reveal How They Develop Trademarks for Print and New Media
by Gregory
Thomas, Earl A. Powell
Book Description
Logos are everywhere. You can't walk down a supermarket aisle, open a magazine,
drive down the highway or turn on tv without being pummeled with graphic
IDs that shout, "Apple Computers!" or "Nike!" or "Purina!"
Now see where great logos, symbols and icons come from. If you want to understand
what makes them "tick"--what makes them good--then look here.
This is not your typical collection of neat-and-polished, finished designs.
This book steps into the international studios of top designers as ideas
happen--to show you what worked, what didn't, and why. You'll even get an
up-close and personal look at the making of symbols and icons--two fast-growing,
but rarely covered, fields of design.

Color Manual, 24,000 CMYK Combinations for Design, Prepess, and Printing
by Michael Rogondino, Pat Rogondino (Illustrator)
Book Description
Today graphic design is done almost exclusively on screen, where colors
look different than when they are printed. To help designers and the people
who work with them address this critical disparity, authors Michael and
Pat Rogondino have completely revised and expanded their standard manual,
Computer Color (0-87701-739-5). A boon for all designers, production people,
artists, and printers, Process Color Manual provides an astounding 24,000
colors that match from computer display to printed page. The standard-issue
Pantone color books, by comparison, can cost as much as $175 and offer only
3000 colors!...

Pantone
Guide to Communicating with Color
by Leatrice Eiseman

Excellent Resource, October 19, 2001
Reviewer: M. Bulger from North Vancouver, BC Canada I teach
digital media and design to grade eleven and twelve students. This is the
only book on Color that my students responded to with enthusiasm. The book
covers color theory very basically. However, it does an excellent job of
covering the more important topics of the meaning and psychology of colors
and color combinations. The author uses good examples for each section and
the book can be used as a learning tool or a resource you can use again
and again. My students found the many pantone color combination swatches
very useful in helping setup the color schemes for their designs. My students
and I recommend this book highly, You might say this review is 5 stars taken
80 times.
